Index to the 'Personal Copy'
(The Killerton manuscript)
Introduction
This index has been prepared for the benefit of those who may be looking for particular songs in the Baring-Gould Manuscripts. It has been compiled by working through the Killerton Manuscripts (The Personal Copy) and listing each of the songs together with page numbers as given by Baring-Gould together with his song numbers. Although the second and third manuscript volumes had been indexed, presumably by Baring-Gould himself, there are a number of difficulties (described below) that make these indices less helpful than they might be.
Because of the inconsistencies in the pagination and song numbering I have also devised and used a system for referring to the songs that should make it easier to locate any particular song in the manuscripts.
Since I first produced this index three years ago I have studied the Fair Copy and Rough Manuscript in Plymouth in more detail and with greater understanding as well as exploring the Killerton manuscripts more fully. I have also ‘discovered’ additional notebooks belonging to Baring-Gould which record words to songs as well as correspondence from many of the people who responded to his requests in newspapers for songs. I have also worked through the manuscript for a second time to note the first lines of all the songs. I hope to be in a position, later in 1998, to produce a full index to the various Baring-Gould manuscripts and published collections, which will begin to cross-reference songs between them.
Notes on the manuscript
The books at Killerton House represent the core of the family library that was removed from Lewtrenchard Manor in the early 70’s. The greater part of the material in that library had been purchased by Sabine Baring-Gould.
The most significant documents for the folk music enthusiast are three bound manuscript volumes which are his own fair copy of the songs that he collected - over 650 of them, with a number of variants given for several of the songs. This remarkable collection is the primary record of Baring-Gould’s activity in song collecting from 1888 until about 1917.
The first volume is, essentially, the fully detailed collection notes for the first edition of ‘Songs of the West’ There are some differences and, as with the other volumes, Baring-Gould has economically filled the last few pages with additional songs which do not appear in the published volume.
In the second and third volumes SBG decided to leave adequate space between songs to be able to insert variants as he obtained them. In fact this was not necessary by the third volume as he was not collecting as actively and was usually only getting one or two variants for each song. He must have taken a pragmatic decision at some point not to start a fourth volume and, instead, to fill in the spaces as new songs arrived. This, of course, meant that his numbering system no longer had any value and he stopped numbering the songs altogether. In fact he had already created a system that was flawed and, as can be seen from the notes below, this makes reference to songs by page number and song number difficult. For this reason I have developed a numbering system identifying volume, page and song number by which each song can be found.
Layout and numbering system used by Baring-Gould:
The layout of the books and the system used for numbering are as follows:
Numbering system used for this index of the manuscripts
Because of the inconsistencies noted above I have devised a reference system that identifies each song by the Volume Number, the Page Number and the Song Number. In this way it is possible to find songs easily. Thus ‘Sweet Nightingale’ is designated K1 p46 No 57 (or K1.46.57). In each case the pagination and the song numbering is that used by Baring-Gould. I have also recorded where he repeated song numbers by using the designation ‘bis’ for the second occurrence.
