Baring-Gould's Places

Lewtrenchard

Lewtrenchard Manor is still owned by the Baring-Gould family though it is now leased as a hotel. This was the family home that Baring-Gould devoted a lot of his time and money to re-creating in the style he thought appropriate

This is the little Church of St Petrock, Lewtrenchard where Baring-Gould was Parson from 1881 until his death in 1924. He devoted a further part of his energy and funds to the rebuilding of this little church to make it 'A Lantern for my Christ'

The interior of the church is also the creation of Sabine Baring-Gould. The pews were reconstructed using ends he had put aside safely when he was young. The screen was the work of two ladies from Exeter and the painting was the work of his daughter Margaret.
